Don’t be that guy that has to sit out of something because you posted something stupid on Facebook. Or don’t be that guy that thought something was funny and post it on social media.

This can affect you in the long run. For example, posting on Instagram can affect you when it comes to be accepted into a school. College recruits look at your social media before recruiting an athlete.

#1. Social media is a tool, not a toy. When I say this I don’t mean you can’t have fun with it but be careful what you post. Post things that are funny but don’t harm or insult someone.

#2.  Nothing is truly private…   ever. Once you post something on social media anyone can see. Facebook for an example. If you post something only to your friends and one of them likes it, that like allows that person’s friends to see it also.

#3. If you retweet it (or share it), you own it. It doesn’t matter if a friend post something funny on social media and it not a good image to have on social media. Guess what, if you share it, you now own it.

#4. Personal branding, every tweet reflects who you are. So if you tweet that you hate your school, guess what that reflects on you and your school as a whole. Making both look bad and unworthy of a job or scholarship.

Think about this, YES, NO, MAYBE. If you what to do something but you can’t determine if it’s the right or wrong thing to do. So if you can’t determine it and you think maybe or no.

Most likely the answer is no. Maybe and no mean the same thing. Another example is, would you like your mother to see what you are posting. So if the answer is no don’t post it and vice versa.

Social Media also allows you to promote your own work. For example, I created this portrait this semester in my graphic design class. Social media will allow me to brand myself and get my work out there.

Social media also allows you to get information like special events out easier. In the past people use to put up flyers to promote those now just put the info on Facebook and now the information is out there.

So think about this when it come to social media. Would mama want to see it, will it help you get the big job, will you be allowed into a school if a recruiter sees it or will it set you back for the rest of your life.
